Pinin Farina introduced a 250-based prototype at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show which came to be called the 250 GT Boano.
Ferrari was very serious about producing the 250 GT Coupe in large numbers, so much that Pinin Farina couldn’t handle the expected production workload, especially since their new factory at Grugliasco wasn’t complete. Ferrari instead turned to one of Pinin Farina designers, Mario-Felice Boano of Carrozzeria Boano for the production of the bodies and interiors based on the Pinin Farina design.
Boano had both a design house in Turin and a production plant in Brescia, called Carrozzeria Boano Lavorazioni Speciali. They could handle large orders and gladly accepted the order from Ferrari which was significant. Because Boano acted as a subcontractor, his name was never mentioned in the promotion of the model.
Boano proceeded to build these cars with slight styling alterations from the five cars that Pinin Farina had already built, the most notable being a lower fender line. When Boano’s namesake moved to Fiat in 1957, his son in law, Ezio Ellena, took over production under tthe banner of Carrozzeria Ellena. Ellena too, matde minor cosmetic changes, in particular, a raised roofline, prompting the use of the terms “Low Roof” for Boano built bodies and “High Roof” for those by Ellena.
Chassisnumbers ranged from 0429GT to 0675GT
